Sermon notes "Seasonal Comforter"

Seasonal Comforter

Oct 16, 2016

Dr. Ed Newton

Introduction:

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." John 14:16-17

Jesus gives you the UNDERSTANDING how to live, but the Holy Spirit gives you the UNCTION to do it!

Foundation Principle #1:

The Holy Spirit is a Person: He is to be Revered as God.
Foundation Principle #2:

The Holy Spirit has Purpose: He is to be Regarded in Guidance.
Key Words:

• "Another"- Indicates one like myself (Jesus), who will take my place, do my work.
• "Helper"- The Greek word is parakletos and is translated "Comforter" or "Advocate" meaning to come alongside and assist.  (Only used in John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7; 1 John 2:1)

Key Concept:

The Holy Spirit is one with Jesus as Jesus is one with the Father.  So, the Trinity of God is not 1+1+1=3 instead 1x1x1=1
I. The Enduement of the Holy Spirit (He Resided "Upon")

"In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit was given selectively and temporarily to indwell certain individuals for special ministries. It was not universal nor was it permanent"

Three Key Phrases used in the Old Testament concerning the Holy Spirit (3):  He "Came" (2 Chronicles 24:20) /He "Rested" (Numbers 11:25)/He "Filled" (Exodus 31:3)

II. The Empowerment of the Holy Spirit (He Resided "With")

The disciples were empowered with the Holy Spirit to do miracles, cast out demons, and pronounce forgiveness marking them with an "apostolic blessing" (Luke 10:21-23).  This is the connection to the statement found in John 14:12 revealing "greater works".
III. The Engagement of the Holy Spirit (He Resides "In")

It is within indwelling Acts 1:8/2 Timothy 1:7 "power of the Holy Spirit" that we receive Him as the One who:
• Defends our Innocence (John 14:26)
• Deposit of our Inheritance (2 Timothy 1:14, Ephesians 1:14)
• Delivers as our Intercessor (Romans 8:26-27)
• Depicts Illumination through (1 Cor. 2:10): Speaking (Acts 7), Leading (Acts 8: 29, Romans 8:14) Commanding (Acts 16:6-7) Revealing (John 16:13)

Quote:

"The Holy Spirit within in you is better than the Jesus beside you" JD Greear
Where is the Holy Spirit Working? "Changing the World, Acts 17:6"

• World: Restraining (2 Thessalonians 2:7)  & Revealing (John 16:7-11)
• Church: (Ekklesia-Called Out Assembly): Releasing (1 Cor. 12:13-14/Eph. 2:22)
• Individually: Reviving (Galatians 2:20)
