Heart Surgery

"You don't get wormy apples off a healthy tree, nor good apples off a diseased tree. The health of the apple tells the health of the tree. You must begin with your own life-giving lives. It's who you are, not what you say and do, that counts. Your true being brims over into true words and deeds.
Luke 6:43‭-‬45 MSG

EXAMPLE
A man fell and no one helped because they didn't want to lose their place line. It was inconvenient to their goal. Am I so committed to my on agenda that I will step over someone in need?

It's not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth."
Matthew 15:11 NLT

"Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.  But the words you speak come from the heart—that's what defiles you.  For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.  These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you."
Matthew 15:17‭-‬20 NLT

Treasure is accrued over time and increases in value.

When the enemy attacks what's in your heart is what comes out.

Feelings will lie to you. That's why we don't function on feelings we are led by the holy Spirit. Feelings have limited vision.

You can me externally observant AND consistently immoral.

You have to change the confession of your mouth with a change in your heart.

What kind of legacy do I want to have?

Feelings betray responsibility.
Even though this feels good, I have responsibility.

Feelings betray necessity.
Feelings betray accountability.

Stay with the people who will tell you truth even when you dont want to hear it.

Heart for God's word.
Heart for God's plan.
Heart for God's people.

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalms 119:11 NLT

Sermon notes "Fruit of the Bloom"

Fruit of the Bloom

Nov 6, 2016

Dr. Ed Newton

John 14:16-17

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
• Reject moral deism

• Exercise your giftings

Foundational Principles of the Holy Spirit:

The Holy Spirit is a Person: He is to be Revered as God.
The Holy Spirit has Purpose: He is to be Regarded in Guidance.
The Holy Spirit is a Promise: He is to be Rested in as the Guarantee.
The Holy Spirit is Pure: He is to be Rooted in Growth.
The Holy Spirit is Personal: He is not to be Rejected by being Grieved.
• It's not about working but resting in the Holy Spirit so that He can produce these things in your life.

I. The Singularity of the Fruit:

Galatians, 5:22
a.  Distributor: It is important to observe that the fruit described here is not produced by a believer, but by the Holy Spirit working through a Christian who is in vital union with Christ (cf. John 15:1-8).

b. Description: The word "fruit" is singular, indicating that these qualities constitute a unity, all of which should be found in a believer who lives under the control of the Spirit.

• But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
Galatians 5:22‭-‬26 NIV
http://bible.com/111/gal.5.22-26.NIV

• "Fruit" is singular. (Imagining a Basket is wrong, imagine Fruit by the Foot)

II. The Survey of the Fruit:

Galatians, 5:22-23
9 Virtues reveal 3 sub-categories:  Upward, Outward, Inward.
• The attributes of Upward are "love, joy and peace" reflecting our relationship with God.
• The attributes of Outward are "patience, kindness and goodness" responding to our responsibility with Man.
• The attributes of Inward are "faithfulness, gentleness and self control" revealing a requirement for ourselves.

• John 3:16, John 15:13, John 13:15, 1 Corinthians 13
• Love (Selfishness*)
• Joy (Sorrow*) is based on a reality that never changes.
• Peace (Strife*)
• Practical Atheism: God I believe that you can be raised from the dead, but you can't
• Patience (Short Fused*)
• Kind (Slander*)
• Goodnes (Shame*)
• Faithfulness (Sporadic*)
• Gentleness (Shrewd*) don't work an angle with people.
• Self-Control (Sensual*) You can't just do something because it feels good.

*Antonyms

III. The Suppression of the Fruit:

Galatians, 5:24
a. Grieve the Spirit (Ephesians 4:30):  "means to afflict with sorrow, to cause grief, offend."
b. Quench the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19):  "means to dampen, hinder, repress, and in preventing the Holy Spirit from exerting His full influence."

• Don't throw a wet towel on the fire.

• If you walk in the flesh then you're welcoming the enemy.

• There's just 2 choices on the shelf: pleasing God or pleasing self.

IV. The Synopsis of the Fruit:

Galatians, 5:25-26
The word translated proud is used only here in the whole New Testament; it can be literally rendered "vain–gloried."
Jesus displays all 9

Since the Holy Spirit is a Person, He can be offended:

Matthew, 12:1-32 Acts, 5:3-4 Hebrews, 10:29
• Lied to the Holy Spirit: (Acts 5:3-4):
• Insulted the Holy Spirit: (Hebrews 10:29)
• Blasphemed the Holy Spirit: (Matthew 12:31-32)

Application:

If the Spirit produces the fruit, then the pursuit is not the fruit, but the Spirit.
