Take A Closer Look

I'm upset and I'm sure that there will be those who read my post and judge me as irresponsible and cruel

just like my accuser did. Nevertheless I am going to share my experience here because it bothers me that society condones so many knee-jerk uninformed decisions. In condoning those decisions we have strengthened the everyone's confidence in taking uniformed actions. Though this situation upset me, I'm glad that when others were in my situation I sided with them and approached the situation with an open mind. I hope that in sharing this experience,

you will be motivated to take a closer look before you react.

In the next few paragraphs I will describe an incident that took place

as well as some of my subsequent research.

 

I took my dog to the park and it started to rain, so I headed home but then decided to stop at Wal-Mart to pick up 3 items. Obviously, I left Canon, my dog, in the car. Literally just as I headed to the register I heard a page on the loud speaker, "will the owner of a Black Mercedes..." with my license plate number please go to your car.  I already knew what happened so I placed my items at the register and went outside where my suspicion was confirmed. An irate man stood in front of my car and proceeded to yell at me about how irresponsible he deemed me and informed me that if he saw my dog in the car again that he planned to break my window. At which point I told him that the police would arrest him for vandalism. Even after showing him that my sunroof vent was open, he said that if I went back in the store without opening my windows that he planned to break my window. I am adverse to conflict so I just left. I tried to end the exchange positively, thanking him for his concern but he was still yelling so I just closed my door and drove away; I didn't even go back in to purchase my items.

 

Canon had been in the car less than 10 minutes at near room temperature conditions. Let me give you a few facts about the day. Like I said, it had started raining so it was overcast. According to the national weather service the day's high would be 83 and the temperature gauge in my car read 80° at the time. (To put things in perspective, the current temperature in my house is 78°.) I recently purchased a camera to clip on Canon onto Canon's collar when we go on walks. I had taken it off of his collar and clipped on the back seat. It was set to take a picture every minute. When I got home I downloaded the pictures to my computer and between the time that I left the car and the time that the man approached my car only 8 pictures had been taken. That means that he had been in the car alone for 8 minutes. If I had a chance to check out, then that would have been about 2 more minutes.

Even with the news of "good Samaritans" breaking windows to "free" animals I never thought twice about leaving Canon in the car while I grab a few items. But I've been stewing over this situation since it happened and decided to research Texas Animal laws.

 

According to a post written by Ben, J.D. on JustAnswer.Com, it is not unlawful to leave a dog alone in a parked car with the windows rolled down slightly for any amount of time no matter what the temperature is outside in the state of Texas. He says that none of the aforementioned conduct "is unlawful per se". He goes on to explain that Texas has no statute addressing leaving animals in a vehicle. There is a general "animal cruelty" law.

 

There was a case,  Leonard Lopez, Appellant, v. The State of Texas, where the court convicted the defendant of cruelty to animals where the defendant left his dog in the car on a hot, sunny, dry day with the windows only cracked an inch and a half while he watched a movie at a theater. His action was deemed "transporting or confining animal in a cruel manner." That day the high was 93 and the low was 75. I was unable to find anymore details but I'm pretty sure that my actions today don't even come close to that standard.

 

I decided to share this experience as a cautionary tale for dog owners and "Good Samaritans".

 

"Good Samaritans", should you happen to notice a dog in a parked car don't let your emotions get the best of you. You don't know the background of this situation. The "good Samaritan" went on about how irresponsible he deemed me and directed me to take better care of my dog based on less than 15 minutes observing my life and less than 2 minutes of interacting with me. Now, I believe that everyone can do better in any situation but anyone who knows Canon knows that we spoil him rotten and that he visits the doctor more than we do. (Please follow Canon on Instagram). Take a closer look at the situation and recognize that you just met this person and this dog. You know very little about the situation, even less about the dog, and nothing about the person. Not everyone is a monster.

 

Dog owners, there are people who are being empowered by society to act on dangerous impulses. If you get into a confrontation with one of these "good Samaritans" remove yourself from the situation. I know that if your dog is in your car then you love that animal. Remember to open the vent just so air is flowing and if you plan to be away from the car for long leave a cup of water. Try to park in an area out of director sunlight but in plain view. I parked in the front so had he done anything or had he called the police there were several witnesses and security cameras; the witnesses would have been able to verify what actually happened and there would have been camera evidence. You've taken care of your dog for years and were only stopping by the store to grab a few items. Not everyone will understand.

Vision time! Even though I'm a creative person, vision boards never really helped me. I get my inspiration from within. Even when I shop. I imagine what I want and then go find it; this is why it takes me so long to shop for anything. I may go to the store and leave with nothing because they didn't sell what I had in my head.

All that to say, vision boards can't inspire me. By the time I find a picture of what I want to see, I will have wasted so much time. For people like me, Jon had this suggestion:

Write that article as if your goal already been realized. Think 100-250 words for length. 

ByJRochelle doubles its Facebook followers in 30 days by Cultivating Relationships!

Through her company, ByJRochelle, she seeks to help others get their message across. Unfortunately not many people knew about her company’s capabilities, so she set out to double her Facebook followers in 30 days, and she did! In addition to working in communication she consistently connects with people through service because she believes that if she can help, the she should help. This day is all about WHO!  Jon says that having a helper makes it easier to accomplish a goal. This person will play the role of my accountability partner; he/she will call me on my excuses, celebrate my successes, and track progress with me! Jon warns against choosing a BFF or spouse to avoid undue pressure. So today I pick who.

I like the idea of picking a "who" but I don't know if there is a person other than a BFF or spouse who will care as much about my goal. I started my business 3 years ago and most of the "random" people in my life don't seem to care much about how things go with my company or me. I have one person in mind with whom I have been friends with since 2008.I hope that this will help!

Day 6

Those these first few challenges focus on preparing for goals Jon made it clear that the hustle goes on! I constantly work on increasing the ByJRochelle Facebook page engagement and I started working on ways to specifically double my facebook followers on Day 1. These first few steps will help "refine the method". With that said, today we need to establish the WHERE!

Jon references a study by Peter Gollwitzer from the University of Konstanz, Germany, where researchers asked two groups of students to work on essays over the holiday break.  They instructed one group to write down when and where they would work on the essays. The other group received no instruction. At the end of the experiment, 32 percent of the students who did not make a plan failed. Twice as many who made a plan succeeded.

Jon wants us to specifically decide where to work on this goal. We need to say “My home office in the red chair" not simply "My home”. I'd tell you specifically where I will work, but I don't want to encourage stalkers! So until later!

I generally make Macro goals all the time but I have never made micro goals for myself.  In true Jeniro-style, I'm creating a graphic calendar. Sure, writing it would be faster but my way is more fun.

Today’s challenge is about fun. Jon is challenging us to add an element of fun to my goal. As much as I love fun, the Day 4 challenge really got me stuck. I googled "fun ways to increase facebook followers" while rendering a video for Escape From Poverty (because rendering seems endless). The top hit went to  4 Fun Ways to Improve Your Facebook Engagement  By Cas McCullough. He suggests 4 games to engage followers. I like the concept. I'll have to think of a game that will suit ByJRochelle and me! I'd like for the game to include pictures.

Break Out

I acted in a television commercial today. The commercial will seek to raise awareness about Joel Osteen's book, Break Out. 

Break Out discusses how God Created us to leave our marks on our generations and not just get by with average, unrewarding or unfulfilling lives. God created us to leave our marks on our generations. This book gives five ways to go beyond our barriers  and live extraordinary lives.

I'm not sure that any book can give 5 ways to go beyond my barriers. Every time I talk to anyone about what I can do to be successful usually, everything that they tell me is circumstantial and good luck. But Joel Osteen is very encouraging. He has a way of saying things that encourages me to want to try anyway. So even though I thing it's all luck, I say if it's all luck, then why not try. It may not work, but what if it does. It's funny how most people are eager to believe the worse when there is an equal opportunity that the best can happen.

Either way, I had fun today. I can't wait to see myself and my friends in the commercial. They shot the commercial with a Canon C300 and the videographers seemed to be excited about that. All of the extras in my scene are members of Lakewood Church's drama team. Many of us are working actors, some of us act on the side. I feel so honored to be a part of the drama team and I'm believing that we will all break out soon. :-)

• Imagine looking at this family from the neighbor's perspective.

They were obviously doing well. Even though everything looks good you don't know know what's going on in the inside.

• We've lost a little of that facade and the "last frontier" is what's going on in our head.

• The prodigal son gets all the attention and no one says anything about the son who is doing good.

• v.26 You can tell there hadn't been a party in a while because the "good son" said, "what's going on."

• v.28 The older brother became angry but he was already frustrated. He probably had to work harder. The dad was probably always saying "i wonder when brother is coming home" and etc...All the while he's thinking I'm here being faithful and working hard, can you be happy that I'm here.

• Sometimes it's hard to determine the makeup from the man.

• v.28 when the brother went out, the father went after him...he same father who celebrated the one who came home. The Lord says, "Before you miss my party, I'm coming out to get you."

• God is to wise to allow my happiness be predicated on someone else's behavior.

• It's time to let go of the silent frustration.

Office Space

As a self-employed person just starting out, I call the cafes and libraries of Houston my offices. When I'm not on location I return emails, edit video, and design graphics among my neighbors. These neighbors can serve as inspiration or distractions. When the later is true, it helps to have a good office. A place with enough room to disengage without having to cram yourself into a corner goes a long way. Good lighting, a pleasant aroma, sufficient research material, and CLEAN BATHROOMS [with good soap and no touch hand dryers] all ameliorate productivity. I have found quite a few good spots like Looscan Library.

Located at 2510 Willowick near Westheimer Road, Looscan provides an excellent venue to work. The beautiful edifice complete with a bell tower sets the scene for a pleasant experience. Looscan provides ample parking and handicap wide accessible doors. So whether you have a physical disability or full hands you will have no problems entering the building.

Once you enter the library there is a cafe style sitting area where you can have a snack before you dive into work or take a lunch break once you start. The large window makes this an ideal seating area for anyone waiting on a ride.

The library itself provides 3 distinct areas in addition to it's computer lab, which has over 25 computers available for pateons to use. The chidren have a "tree house" area; as your little one explores, he/she will enter a forest complete with carved squirrels and fun stuffed animals. There is a teen reading area with comfy bright red and white pods. Finally, Looscan provides an adult reading room with stylish club chairs; you will think that you sit in the posh study of an old house.

Along the walls in front of each large window is a table near an electrical outlet that has 4 sockets. There is sufficient room for your Mac, your iPad, your iPhone, all of your notes, your research materials, your study/business partner, and ladies your purse!

Needless to say, I had a pleasantly productive day at Looscan. I cleared my to-do list and the time flew by! If you are looking for a surrogate office try out this great locale!
