Sermon notes "Talk to Me"

Talk to Me

Oct 30, 2016

Dr. Ed Newton

John 14:16-17 ESV

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Foundation Principle #1:

The Holy Spirit is a Person: He is to be Revered as God.
Foundation Principle #2:

The Holy Spirit has Purpose. He is to be regarded in guidance.
Foundation Principle #3:

The Holy Spirit is a Promise: He is to be Rested in as the Guarantee.
Foundation Principle #4:

The Holy Spirit is Pure. He is to be Rooted in Growth.
null

Talking and communicating is determined not only upon information transfer, but whether the information is received from the sender.
Therefore, two questions must be asked in how we learn to communicate with the Holy Spirit:
1) How do we recognize His Voice?
2) How do we respond to His Voice?
The answer to these questions is the hinge on the door that will usher in the kingdom of God through you.

Recognize His Voice:  Sensitivity

I. The Holy Spirit Brings the Word:  (2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21)

a. Conveys: John 14:26
b. Clarifies: John 16:13

II. The Holy Spirit Bears Witness: (Romans 8:16)

a. Commands: Galatians 5:16
b. Convicts: John 16:8
c. Comforts: Philippians 4:6-7

commanding, convicting, comforting

III. The Holy Spirit Bestows Wisdom: (1 Cor. 2:6-16, 12:8, Isaiah 11:2)

a. Counsels: Matthew 10:19-20
b. Confirms: 1 John 2:27

IV. The Holy Spirit Brightens THE Way: (Romans 8:14, Ezekiel 36:27)

a. Calls:  Hebrews 3:15
b. Conforms: 1 John 2:6

Respond to His Voice: Surrender

I. Welcome Divine Interruptions: (1 Thessalonians 5:19, Ephesians 4:30)
II. Watch for Divine Intervention: (Acts 8:29)
III. Walk in Divine Interaction:  (Galatians 5:22)
To walk daily in sensitivity to the INNER workings of the Holy Spirit while in surrender to the OUTER workings of the Holy Spirit is the Spirit-filled life.

Sermon notes "Seasonal Comforter"

Seasonal Comforter

Oct 16, 2016

Dr. Ed Newton

Introduction:

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." John 14:16-17

Jesus gives you the UNDERSTANDING how to live, but the Holy Spirit gives you the UNCTION to do it!

Foundation Principle #1:

The Holy Spirit is a Person: He is to be Revered as God.
Foundation Principle #2:

The Holy Spirit has Purpose: He is to be Regarded in Guidance.
Key Words:

• "Another"- Indicates one like myself (Jesus), who will take my place, do my work.
• "Helper"- The Greek word is parakletos and is translated "Comforter" or "Advocate" meaning to come alongside and assist.  (Only used in John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7; 1 John 2:1)

Key Concept:

The Holy Spirit is one with Jesus as Jesus is one with the Father.  So, the Trinity of God is not 1+1+1=3 instead 1x1x1=1
I. The Enduement of the Holy Spirit (He Resided "Upon")

"In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit was given selectively and temporarily to indwell certain individuals for special ministries. It was not universal nor was it permanent"

Three Key Phrases used in the Old Testament concerning the Holy Spirit (3):  He "Came" (2 Chronicles 24:20) /He "Rested" (Numbers 11:25)/He "Filled" (Exodus 31:3)

II. The Empowerment of the Holy Spirit (He Resided "With")

The disciples were empowered with the Holy Spirit to do miracles, cast out demons, and pronounce forgiveness marking them with an "apostolic blessing" (Luke 10:21-23).  This is the connection to the statement found in John 14:12 revealing "greater works".
III. The Engagement of the Holy Spirit (He Resides "In")

It is within indwelling Acts 1:8/2 Timothy 1:7 "power of the Holy Spirit" that we receive Him as the One who:
• Defends our Innocence (John 14:26)
• Deposit of our Inheritance (2 Timothy 1:14, Ephesians 1:14)
• Delivers as our Intercessor (Romans 8:26-27)
• Depicts Illumination through (1 Cor. 2:10): Speaking (Acts 7), Leading (Acts 8: 29, Romans 8:14) Commanding (Acts 16:6-7) Revealing (John 16:13)

Quote:

"The Holy Spirit within in you is better than the Jesus beside you" JD Greear
Where is the Holy Spirit Working? "Changing the World, Acts 17:6"

• World: Restraining (2 Thessalonians 2:7)  & Revealing (John 16:7-11)
• Church: (Ekklesia-Called Out Assembly): Releasing (1 Cor. 12:13-14/Eph. 2:22)
• Individually: Reviving (Galatians 2:20)

The Holy Spirit

Dr. Ed Newton @ Community Bible Church

"I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.  You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father.  Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it! "If you love me, obey my commandments.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.  He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.
John 14:12-17 NLT

I often wonder if religion is the enemy of God. It's almost like religion is what happens when the Spirit has left the building. God's Spirit moves through us and the world at a pace that can never be constricted by any one religious paradigm.
-Bono

We all see problems in the church. We don't need another book to point those out. We need the faith to believe that the solution is really quite simple: The Holy Spirit.
-Francis Chan
Foundation Principle #1:  The Holy Spirit is a Person
  • He is to be Revered as God
  • His Parallel in Equality: The Holy Spirit is listed as the third person of the Trinity not because of order of importance, but in role and relationship.

    • Verses
      • Hebrews 9:14 (Eternal)
      • Psalm 139:7-10 (Omnipresent)
      • 1 Cor. 2:10-11 (Omniscient)
      • Rom. 1:4 (Holy)
    • Breath of God throughout scripture.
    • His Partnership in Creating:
    • The Trinity of God is simply the Father designing, the Son decreeing, The Holy Spirit deploying.
    • Verses
      • Gen. 1:2
      • Gen. 1:27
      • Luke 1:35-37
      • 2 Tim. 3:16
      • Rom. 8:11
  • His Picture in Enabling: The Holy Spirit is often best explained through imagery in order to give insight within complexity.
    • Verses
      • Matthew 3:16 (Dove)
      • Acts 2:3 (Fire)
      • Hebrews 1:9 (Oil)
      • John 3:5 (Water)
      • John 3:8 (Wind
    • Pentecost ● Passover ● Promise
    • I'm a guiding compass flying for all to see. I'm a burning bush. I'm an overflow of His living water.
  • His Personality in Equipping:  The Holy Spirit activates the power of God and the finished work of Christ in the life of the believer.
    • Verses
        • 2 Chronicles 24:20
        • Num. 11:25
